Hello everyone.
Darryl and I are just completing our fourth day in Broken Hill and will head off to Wentworth tomorrow. We will be heading down the asphalt as the dirt road down the eastern side of the river is not recommended at the moment. Just means that we will have to do the trip AGAIN – such a trial that will be Hehehehe.
We left Menindee on Tuesday morning and the wind was picking up as we drove along – so when we arrived in Broken Hill we had a strong head-wind.
coming into Broken Hill
The big ant – made by Pro Hart.
We booked into the van park and got set up then went and did some grocery shopping. Back to the van and checked out the area.
Wednesday morning we headed off to Silverton and checked out the places that Darryl used to go with his dad. The Silverton Hotel has been in over 135 movies/commercials/documentaries in the past 40 years.
was in a ‘Town Like Alice’ + “The Craic” and other movies
We went to Mundi Mundi Lookout and you can see the curvature of the earth from there.
Then on to the Umberumberka Reservoir, back into Silverton and spent quite a lot of time checking out the old Gaol and museum.
Sturt’s Desert Pea
Back into town and ready to go to our friends – Nora and Dave – for dinner. We arrived at 6pm and left at 2am…….. We had quite a lot to chat about….. but unfortunately Darryl didn’t get to see any of the state of origin and had to wait until Thursday to find out the result.
Thursday we went to the Bourke Ward School so that Darryl could take photos of his old school.
He kept saying – ‘it looks smaller than I remember’ could have something to do with the fact that he is taller and it was 42 years since he had seen it J
We then visited the ‘Line of Lode’ lookout and the monument to the miners who had died in Broken Hill.
We also sat on the ‘Big park Bench’ which is up there and overlooks the city of Broken Hill. It was very Blustery and Cold that morning. As you can tell by our clothes. Thanks Aunty Kath for the Beanie!!!! It has been very useful...
Line of Lode Monument and the café up on the hill.
We then went into town just as the Indian Pacific train was SLOWLY rolling into town.
The train comes into town twice a week and stays for 2 hours. Giving people on the train time to do a Silver City tour if they want.
We visited the Twin Lakes out near one of the mines where Darryl says they used to do a lot of Yabbying but it is now prohibited. Just as well as the water is not very clean.
Lots of ducks on the lakes.
We visited the Police Boys Club and spoke to the current manager. She was very interested to see if Daz has any photos from the time that they were in Broken Hill.
Friday we spent the day with Nora and Dave – such a great day. They are truly lovely people. Look forward to catching up with them again.
Our coldest night has been Thursday night with -0.9 degrees Celsius.
Hoping that you are all keeping well.
Looks like you are having a great time, glad you caught up with Nora and Dave. Had to laugh at you sat on the big bench, you look like a little girl LOL,
