South East South Australia 12.8.11

Hello there,
Well we are currently sitting in the van on the top of a sand dune overlooking the Southern Ocean about 21km NW of Kingston SE in SA at a place called the Granites.   There are 3 largish granite rocks on the beach but many more under the water – which were evident at low tide.
You are allowed 4X4 access to the beach year round from here – so we have had plenty of traffic going through the campsite to the beach.
That is us closest to the camera!!!!! :D

Yesterday we left Victor Harbour and drove up through Middleton to Finnis and Milang on our way to Wellington.

That is Lake Alexandrina……. Can you see it.... in front and to the right!!!

Wellington is the last village/town on the Murray before it enters Lake Alexandrina.  We stopped here and watched the ferry and then we boarded it and travelled across to The Coorong.

The Coorong National Park cover from Victor Harbor to Kingston SE going via the Younghusband Peninsula.  As we drove along we passed Lake Alexandrina, Lake Albert and stopped at Meningie for lunch and stocked up on some groceries.

As we drove we passed a Pink lake.  Yes indeed it was PINK.  Apparently due to the Carotene released by an algae that grows in the high salinity water.

We then travelled on to Salt Creek and then onto the 42 Mile Crossing Campground.

They have some great road signs in SA – this is one of them…….

So called as it is 42 Mile from Kingston SE.  When we arrived here we were met by an EMU.

Was good to see it close up.  There were also wombats and foxes around.

We left the 42 Mile at about 1.45 this afternoon after waiting for the washing to dry.  Even though it was sunny and there was a breeze things took forever to dry.

Anyway we arrived at the Granites at about 2.30 this afternoon and then set up the van and went for a long walk on the beach.

Three of the Granites in the water
We saw lots of natural sponges on the high tide line, cuttle fish – HUGE ones, shells of all shapes and sizes and kelp.

Saw tracks of a lizard and several birds on the beach.  This is the lizard tracks - can you see the tail mark???

Sunset on the Southern Ocean.

Miss you all.

Take care all.
