what a week :D

Monday 27th April Darryl drove me to the University of Queensland in St. Lucia  Brisbane so that I could take part in a study as to the effects of a Virtual Reality program on those who suffer from Meniere's Disorder/Vestibular instability.  This was quite interesting and I was glad to help BUT the Virtual reality thing REALLY upset my wobbles and made me quite nauseous and unbalanced for three days.  But again - hopefully the data they gathered from me has been useful.
Then we had a great week.
Last Thursday we hitched up the caravan and headed off to Killarney in South East Qld with our Caravan group - the Morton Bay Drifters (MBD) Branch of the Australian Caravan Club (ACC).  There were 19 vans booked in for the weekend.
It was drizzling when we left home and it continued to rain lightly all the way there.  We travelled via the Mount Lindesay Highway to Rathdowney and on to Woodenbong and then followed the Mount Lindesay Road through North East NSW into Legume and then back into QLD into Killarney.
The road between Woodenbong and Killarney is being updated in several spots and it is making it two car widths wide - which will make it a lot safer to travel on.  A bit scary when going around a narrow bend to be met by a B-Double truck coming the other way.  Was easier for us to get off the road and let the truck have it then to have him throwing up stones.
The creeks along the way were babbling along and were quite picturesque.
We got to Killarney and booked into the van park to find that most of the group were already there and so began our Muster.
We had steady showers of rain all afternoon but we (14 couples) had a great time up in the camp kitchen.
On Friday we had steady heavy rain and were not able to go out and about BUT we did get to sit in the shed and chatter and the camaraderie was wonderful.  We were unable to play Klopp/Finska as there was nowhere solid enough to play, so we played Quoits or played card games - SkipBo or Phase 10.  Phase 10 is VERY similar to a game that we were shown last year by our friends Doreen and Ken - called FRUSTRATION.
That evening we ventured out in the rain to the Bowling Club for dinner as a booking had been made on our behalf - there were 28 of us there and the rain continued to pour down and we watched the news with all the scenes of flooding around the south-east and thanked the Lord that we were high and 'dry'.
Saturday morning the sun was out and the skies clear so we decided to go for drive into Killarney and were VERY surprised to see how close the town had come to being under water.  The level had got to 7 metres and was lapping the underside of the bridge.  On the downstream side you could see where the water had almost got up into the playing fields and we were also to learn that the road into Warwick - 4 kms from where we were staying - had been cut about 4am that morning.
That afternoon we again had showers of rain - so the outdoor game was again out of question - so back to cards and quoits.  Those that didn't play got to know each other in the chatter.
Sunday was Market day at the Town Hall in Warwick, so we ventured in.  The road was open but you could see where the water had been and where it had washed away the fences.  The markets were a virtual non-event with only 5 of the usual 30 stalls braving the cool, sometimes wet, conditions.
We then walked up the street and realised that it was an outback town and NO shops were open (except for a couple of cafes).  Back to the park and did some knitting and then up to the camp kitchen again for cards and quoits :D
Monday was a lovely clear day and sunny and we said farewell to four couples who headed home and one couple who was starting an 18 month journey around Australia and then we went for a drive up to Brown's Falls (couldn't get more than 300m up the walk as the creek was up over the path :C);  Then onto Dagg's Falls, where Darryl took the photos as my spins were trying to start :CC.  Up past Queen Mary Falls to Carr's lookout.  We were hoping to have morning tea at Spring Creek Cafe and look down the valley to the "Head of the Condomine and beginning of the great Murray-Darling Basin' BUT it was closed for the day.   So we headed back down to Queen Mary Falls and had a coffee at the cafe there.  We were going to try a Devonshire tea but they had run out of scone on Sunday and had not made any more :C.
Whilst there we saw a couple of articles about the nephew of my dear friend Val Mawhinney, young Chris Macgregor was a very TINY baby when he was born in Brisbane and I think he still holds the record for the smallest surviving baby.  Anyway he is a renowned whip-cracker, and a poem titled "The Killarney Kid" is written about him.  I thought he was about our Beckie's age, but his partner works in the cafe and corrected me.  Chris is only 27 not 35 :DD
We then went for a walk around the circuit to see the falls, the first bridge crossing was fine but once we got to see the falls proper - I could take a quick photo and then had to hug the rail and move back to the rock face where I knew I couldn't topple over the edge.
Back to the park and chatter and cards once again.
On Tuesday we said farewell to some more of the group before Darryl and I did a drive to Casino for the day.  A lovely drive which we didn't see much of on the way there due to the very thick fog for the first 2 hours 15 mins of the drive.  The fog cleared about 20km out of Casino.  We had a great day wandering the town and checking it out and young Sarah at the Information Centre was a wealth of knowledge.  We then had lunch and began the journey back.  It was here that we saw the country clearly as the skies were cloudless and the sun was shining.  The journey back only took us 2 hours 5 minutes :D.  It was interesting seeing how HIGH the creeks has risen in the rain but were almost back to there normal heights now.  There was evidence of where the road to Casino had been cut about 7 times from Woodenbong.  On arrival back at the park it was still too wet for Klopp/Finska and so we played cards once more.
Wednesday  My Sister JENNY has her birthday.  Wished her a very Happy Birthday and then Darryl and I headed into the Pig and Calf Markets along with about 4 other couples.  Very interesting and they also have a car-boot sale as well as a fruit and veg market, soft serve ice-cream van and a coffee van.  We then went up the main street, had a wander, got a couple of gifts and then headed back to the van park.  More of the group had headed out this morning and there were only 4 vans left.
We all congregated in the shed for happy hour and then two couples headed out to the local pub for dinner.  A nice meal and great company and the pub shut at 8.10pm and we were asked to leave.  We were quite happy sitting and chatting but did not want to cause angst - so headed back to the vans.
Thursday (today) is our BECKIE's Birthday, so wished her a very Happy Birthday nice and early before the rest of the group headed homewards.  Two were heading out to the highway and then down Cunninghams Gap to Brisbane and the other two were heading back through Woodenbong to Rathdowney and home that way.
We got home to find that our lovely neighbours had put our bins out yesterday and they were now empty.  A great big thank you to Debbie and Paul.  Appreciate your thoughtfulness.

09 April 2014

1.4.2014 - 9.4.2014

Friday 4th April we went into Condobolin with Ian and Wendy and assisted with the setting up of the Showgrounds for the Garden Festival this weekend.  There are to be approx. 30 stalls here as well as a big display from the local nursery (owned by Connie and Gary Venables - good friends of our friend Gai and god-mother to Salli) and some of the well-known horticulturalists and rose specialists will give talks over the weekend.
Saturday 5th Darryl and I went into Condobolin at about 10.30am after getting two loads of washing done and out on the line.  Not sure if they would dry as we had rain last night and it is very overcast and cool now.  We arrived at the showgrounds and everything was in full swing.  Lots of people coming through the gate and there had been two busloads through already.  One from Nyngan and a Double-decker from Orange.  There is a bus load due from the Blue Mountains also.  Jenny arrived from Wagga at about 12.30 - so we had lunch at the stall before starting to head out to the open gardens.
The first one was a 'cottage garden' and it was amazing what the owner had achieved in the 13 years that she has owned the property.  From no garden at all to one that is loaded with plants.  Amazing organisation of layout and presentation of fruit, veggies and flowers.
The next garden was a very young garden.  Only 2 years young and a credit to the young owner as well.  He has done a great deal to a barren yard and has plans for the very back of the yard also.
Next was a garden around a home that was built in 1886 and named 'Tara'.  The yard itself is mainly a young garden (5 years) and contained lots of succulents.  The garden had lots of 'rooms' in which you could lose yourself and find yourself sitting and relaxing.  A credit to the two owners.
Next we went to the Wiradjuri Centre - three wonderful displays of native plants and then there was the centre buildings themselves.  Made of mud bricks and rendered with mud it was an amazing structure.  The piece-d-resistance was the table around which the local elders meet to discuss issues.  An amazing piece of wood work.
We went back to the showgrounds to pick up Jenny's car and headed back to the house to prepare for our night out at another property with 'Music under the Gums' at "the Gums" Property about 8km out of Condobolin.  A great night with great music from all genres.  Music finished at 11pm and then we headed home.  By the time we had a relaxing cuppa it was time for bed BUT we could put our clocks back an hour as daylight saving finishes tonight - so an extra hour of sleep.
Sunday 6th, Up and back into town but stopped off at one of the display gardens on the way.  This was A HUGE garden around the homestead and had a lot of 'rooms' devided by wind-breaks.  Lots of roses and succulents in this garden.
We went into the showground as the local Pipe band was to play at 11am.  This actually started at 11.40am but wasn't too bad considering they have got 7 new drummers and 3 new pipers.
Once we had listended to the band we headed out to the final open garden.  Again a new garden - less then 2 years - and some very interesting ways of incorporating 'domestic' plants into the native growth area.  There was a dining room set up here so we had a lovely lunch looking out over the valley and the new garden.  This garden was owned by the Uncle of Michael Flynn (a friend that Ben went to school with), so I made sure that we introduced ourselves to Simon and Eryn.
From here we headed back to the Showgrounds.  Jenny bade us all farewell at about 2.30pm and Darryl and I stayed to help Wendy and Ian and the committee pack everything up and secure the showgrounds before heading back to the house.  We have decided to have a simple dinner tonight and Wendy is picking up fish and chips on the way back.
Monday 7th April, We have decided to delay our departure and go to lunch ith Wendy and Ian.  We actually had lunch with Richard, Daryl and Joy from the Research station also.  Back to the house and we took our leave and headed to Dubbo via Tullamore and Narromine.  A good run with only 6km of dirt road to Tullamore and then from Tullamore to Narromine we ent through about 12 patcheds of water over the road after the recent rains.  Arriving at our friends Jenny and Doug at about 4.30pm.
Wednesday 9th April, We have had two lovely nights with Jenny and Doug and took our leave of them at 10.30am.  Next visit we will have to ensure we can be there over the weekend - so that Doug can relax with us too.  We are now camped in the bush at Pilliga 2 Rest Area about 30km S of Narrabri.  There are a couple of trucks up in the asphalted area but we have found a spot further back into the bushes, and the road noise is not as loud.
Will continue to travel northward tomorrow.

09 May 2013

Biggenden to Delan, Bundaberg, Gympie and Yandina along with Nambour.

26April
We left Biggenden at about 10am and called into the shop for supplies and then we drove to Delan - about an hours trip north, just out of Gin Gin.
Arrived at Heathers at about 12md and then she and Brendon returned from Bullyard.
Heather took us for a drive around the farm and up to the area where they are currently working.  Was very interesting learning all about the planting and cropping of sweet potatoes and pumpkins and sugar cane.
We left Heather with her workers (and Jessica) and headed back to the van.
Was good to meet Brendon and his children Tiffany (15) and Matthew (8)
Sunset from Brendon and Heathers Place

27April
Today I went into Bundy with Heather to get some parts for a pump for the irrigation of the new Sweet potato crop.  Was to take us just over an hour but ended up taking about 3 1/2 hours.  We got lunch for everyone on the way back.
Heather and Rebecca

When we got back Rebecca was there too – Jessica had driven over to collect her from Darren’s place.  She looks very different with dark hair.
Rebecca and Jessica

Steven is out at Theodore on some school fencing project and will return during the week.
We have all been invited to Heather's boss's 40th birthday tonight at his house.
We will leave at about 5.15pm.
28April
We had a great time last night at Jeff's party and got home at about 1.30am....
Poor Brendon then went out to move the winch (a giant sprinkler system) on the crop of cane and then has been at work since about 5.30am.
All three girls - Heather, Jessica and Rebecca went into – so we tagged along J
We took Rebecca back to where she is living with Darren.  We had a great day with all three girls though.
29April
Today we stayed around the van and I got all our washing done, including the towels and sheets.
We didn't do much else.  Buster is enjoying the fact that he can just run around.
Spending some time under the work ute......

We then cooked dinner for the family. Yesterday when in Bundaberg we went to the Sugarland shopping complex and got food supplies- as we have promised to cook dinner.
Curried chicken for everyone except Jessica who is a vegetarian.  She is going to have curried vegies.  Dinner was a major SUCCESS :D
30April
Today Darryl and I headed into Bundaberg as I saw an ad for Spotlight that has got a slightly better sewing machine for the same price as the one that I have in the van.
Got to Spotlight and asked about the Semco machine on special - was told "sorry we don't have that machine but I can give you another for the same price".  Hmmm.  But when I saw it - it is another Elna with 10 different stitches, plus a 4-step buttonhole and it has a light AND interchangeable feet.  All for $99.  Bargain.
It is Tiffany's 16th Birthday today and we are having a BBQ dinner for tea with her family and friends.  So whilst in town we got extra meat and supplies for the do.
It was a good night and everyone seemed to have a good time.  Lots of food left over though - so will have that for lunch and dinner tomorrow night.
1st May
Steven came home today......

2May
Today Heather and Brendon were lucky enough to be given the day off by the boss, so we all headed into Bundaberg and went to the 11am tour of The Distillery.  A great morning that ended with tasting of the rum.  We now have a couple of bottles of the Royal Liqueur in the van to enjoy around the campfire.  :D
Darryl, Heather and Brendon with Bundy
Barb and Heather with Bundy

We then went to the local fisho for lunch and a lovely meal that was too.
From there Brendon and Heather showed us around Bundaberg and the damage that was done by the floods earlier this year.  We then drove out to Mt Perry and Boolboonda Tunnel.

This tunnel was constructed in 1883-1884 using only pick and shovel, through solid rock.  Two crews started from opposite sides of the mountain and when meeting in the centre they were only about 1cm off perfection.  A wonderful effort I think.
We then drove to Monduran dam and had a wonderful view as the sun went down.
3May
Today we are leaving Delan and Heather and Brendon managed to get back home at about 7am to say farewell to us - which was really nice.  I have done a load of washing and will hang it out when we get to the camp spot.  We travelled down the highway and stopped at Apple Tree Creek for morning tea of Hotdogs and Ginger beer.  J
We then continued on to the Camp spot and met up with our fellow friends from the Campertrailer group.  As we pulled in so did Robyn and Lindsay Jenkinson, friends from near Toowoomba.
We stood around talking for about 15 minutes and decided on the best place to park to charge up the solar panels.  Darryl then manoeuvred the van and as I was trying to level it the passenger side tyre on the van was getting flatter  :C
We changed the tyre and then got the van sorted and had lunch at 3pm :D  Will get the tyre checked in Nambour when visiting Sheryl and Reg.
Started the campfire at 4.30pm and we have got 13 of the 14 registered members here already.  Two have only travelled from Pomona and Cooran - about 20 minutes away :)
Behind us we have got Bob and Jan and their dog Gemma - whom we met at Ceduna in SA last year.
4May
Darryl went for a drive into Gympie today to primarily get a camp chair for Buster and to refill the gas cylinder.  He got back with bread and supplies and refilled cylinder but FORGOT the chair. The rear legs on Busters chair have broken. :(
Darryl cooked scones for late supper, Nicki cooked a coffee cake and icing (wasn't very "coffee-ery" ) but very nice and then Kevin and Kathleen Beckwith cooked a lemon cake which was scrummy also.
5May
Over the course of the day we said farewell to all bar four campers.  Tonight there are only four CTG members left.  Us, Chris Rogers and her Tardis (her Campertrailer, because it can grow and grow and grow J), Bob and Jan and Gregory and Angela.
There were only 3 people around the campfire tonight at the other two couples kept to their caravans.  It started to rain at about 8pm so we all retired to our respective abodes for the night.
6May
Left Cobb and Co Campground at about 10.30am and arrived in Yandina at about 11.30.
Had lunch and contacted Sheryl and Reg and then went to their home.  We were there until 8.30pm.  Poor Buster starving by the time we got him home.  Had a lovely catch-up and dinner with Sheryl and Reg and will have them over to our caravan on Wednesday for dinner.
Ooooops – bloody hell – I forgot Jenny’s birthday L will send her a message first thing tomorrow.
7May
Rang Beckie early and wished her a Happy Birthday.
Spoke with her again when she and Ben had Lunch.
Sent Jenny a message for her birthday – which was yesterday.
Darryl took the spare caravan wheel into Bob Jane to get it checked.  It too has got a fracture in the rim which has caused it to go down.  They have replaced it with a steel rim (cost $105), and they are doing a full tyre rotation on the car with a wheel alignment and balance.  We are to take the van in on Thursday morning and they will replace the other rims for us. YAY Darryl got Buster a new chair.....
I stayed at the van and did the washing and tidied the van.  We have had rain squalls all day.
8May
Today we got up early and went to the markets at Eumundi.  Had breakfast there.  Expensive.  Markets are big but so are the prices.
Found Brian Tisdall - he used to do airbrushing in Darwin and now lives in Eumundi.  Got one of his shirts. http://www.briantisdall.com.au/shirts.htm
Got some german bread for lunch and a sweetbread for snack.  Both Darryl and I got some new Aussie Soles which are VERY similiar to my Slappas (thongs) from Darwin.
Went back to Yandina and called into the Ginger factory and got some jam and ginger beer.
back to the van and lunch and then into bed and a Nanna nap for us both.  Up at 3.30pm and getting the Cobb going for dinner.  Darryl did the vegies in the Cobb and the pork and apple on the cooktop in the van.
Sheryl and Reg arrived at 5pm and we had a lovely dinner with them and they left at 8pm as they have an early start tomorrow.
9May
Today we took the van into Bob Jane at Nambour and they put another two steel rims on the caravan.  We then headed North.  Stopped at Gympie Hungry Jacks for lunch and then continued on and stopped at Gunalda Rest area for the night.  Full phone reception so hopefully that will mean that we have full internet reception also.
Darryl having another poppy nap and Buster asleep on the bed with him.
